Wilhelmina Rise

A lovely and affordable residential neighborhood with more than 80 years of history, Wilhelmina Rise is a classic Honolulu address. Set on a serene hillside above Waikiki and prestigious Waialae-Kahala, it offers panoramic views of the city, ocean and Diamond Head as well as an easy commute to downtown.

Wilhelmina Rise was first developed in the 1930s by Matson Navigation, a shipping and transportation giant that also built Waikiki’s iconic pink Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Several streets in the neighborhood echo the names of Matson’s famed passenger lines, including Lurline, Matsonia, Monterey and Mariposa—and even Wilhelmina, named after a ship built in 1910.

Residents of sunny Wilhelmina Rise take pride in its San Francisco-style main road, also called Wilhelmina Rise, which alternately climbs and levels up the ridge to Maunalani Heights. Sierra Drive offers an easygoing alternative, winding lazily back and forth. Along the way, well-kept homes showcase every decade, from charming vintage bungalows shaded by mango trees to understated modern masterpieces. A park near the top of the rise features a soccer field, tennis court and basketball court. Just below Wilhelmina Rise, on Waialae Avenue, landmark businesses mingle with yoga studios, trendy restaurants and local boutiques.
